Health Studies
As Manitoba is a small province of One million people, and 80% of them live in the Winnipeg capital region, the Universities focus their training needs in specific institutions with little overlap. Health studies in the Brandon area focus on the needs of rural citizens just like those of Winnipeg focus on urban needs. Of course, there is a large amount of overlap, but some areas of concern are paramount for rural health studies:
- The rural centers are found to have an increasingly high "dependency ratio" (of those with no income owing to age or youth) to income earners the smaller the town or village. This means that there is a high need for geriatric services in remote centers.
- Ther is a high and increasing danger on farms owing to chemical use and machinery complexity.
- Urban health centers are attracting doctors away from smaller centers, resulting on increasing responsibilities for Nurses and other health care professionals.
- Public health needs and preventive measures to ensure long and healthy lives are of increasing concern to professionals and laity.
